I draw your attention to two articles in Financial Times, December 2, 
page 2.   I quote most relevant material

1.
"As demonstrators were taking to the streets of Kiev and western criticism 
of Mr. Putin's involvement in Ukraine rose, Mr. Schroeder was describing 
the Russian president as a "dyed-in-the-wool democrat"
In a speech to parliament he said the trouble in Ukraine would not 
distract him from his goal of seeking to establish a "strategic 
partnership" with Russia."

2.
On the same page there is amoving articel "Ppeople wake up to their 
strength in street of Kiev by Wagstyl and Warner,  ending with a quotation 
from Hryhory Nemyrya, chairman of the Renaissance Foundation:
Ukrainians are learning to be free.  Civil society is born."
