SUMMER COURSE
FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

"TRASFORMING A POST-SOVIET SOCIETY: ECONOMIC, POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CHANGE IN UKRAINE"
(May 19 – June 6, 2011)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the transformations that took place in Ukraine after 1991 from various perspectives (political, economic, social, cultural). Additionally the course provides participants with a general idea of ‘post-soviet society’, its main features and development dynamics, thus establishing a necessary framework for understanding other societies of this type. The course includes an overview of Ukraine’s 20th century history, and contextual background for analyzing the country’s place in the international arena at the beginning of the 21st century.

The course is interdisciplinary, and includes four sections: History, Politics, Society/Culture, and Economics (see the table below).

Students will acquire theoretical knowledge that will be enhanced during study trips and practical cases.

None

Type of course
The course is oriented towards advanced Undergraduate students (3rd year), although Master’s level students can also apply.
After completion of the course, students will be issued NaUKMA transcripts.

Course Organization
The course combines in-class sessions (lectures and seminars, interactive presentations with discussion highly encouraged), guest visits, joint discussions with local NaUKMA students, tours (Kyiv, Lviv, Chornobyl). Attendance at all planned activities of the course is obligatory (Chornobyl tour opt-out can be arranged in exceptional cases).

Course Instructor(s)
As the course is designed as a mixture of different types of activities there will be two course supervisors who will ensure academic integrity and will take care of course logistics. External speakers, invited faculty experts etc. will be involved in course teaching as appropriate (for details please refer to the attached preliminary program).

COURSE FEES

Fee for the summer course is 2400 USD.

The fee includes: tuition, cultural program and events, accommodation, trip to Lviv, visit to Chornobyl (opt-out possible – no refunds), lunches (Monday-Saturday, except Saturday 28 May), all meals during the trip to Lviv (breakfasts and lunches), transportation from and to the airport in Kyiv.

International airfare, medical insurance, other meals are not included.
