Subject: Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Ukraine: calls for applications

Dear all,

Please distribute widely the following calls for applications:

Call for applications: VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Deadline: March 1, 2011

The Program invites applications from scholars in Ukraine (and Ukrainianists
outside of Canada) for appointments as a Petro Jacyk Visiting Scholar at the
University of Toronto. The prospective candidates spend four to six weeks in
Toronto conducting research and interacting with Canadian scholars. They are
expected to present a seminar on their work and to take part in relevant
scholarly events. In exceptional circumstances, arrangements may be made for
them to teach. Visits will be scheduled during the sessions of the
university, that is, between September and April.

Petro Jacyk Visiting Scholar positions are open to scholars working in the
social sciences and humanities, including recent PhD or kandydat degree
recipients. To support the new generation of young Ukrainian scholars the
Program also introduces "young scholar" category for those who are under 35
and have not yet received their doctorate. Especially attractive are
applicants whose work relates to the current thematic focus of the program
"Challenges of Independent Ukraine". This focus includes Ukraine's state-
and institution- building, law and governance; problems of democratization;
education, culture and national identity; and foreign policy and
international relations.

CERES pays round-trip airfare (at APEX rates), gives a stipend for living
(typically $1,500 CDN per month), and provides shared office space and
access to the university library as well as assists in arranging housing at
a reasonable cost. Housing and other related living expenses are to be
covered by the stipend.

Call for applications: Petro Jacyk Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ukrainian
Politics, Culture, and Society

Deadline: March 1, 2011

The Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES) at the
University of Toronto is pleased to announce a generous gift from the Petro
Jacyk Education Foundation to fund the Petro Jacyk Post-Doctoral Fellowship
in Ukrainian Politics, Culture, and Society at the University of Toronto.
The objective of the Fellowship is to support the most promising junior
scholars studying contemporary Ukraine and thereby advance academic
understanding of Ukrainian politics, culture, and society.

The Petro Jacyk Post-Doctoral Fellowship is available to junior scholars in
the social sciences and humanities with a research and teaching focus on
contemporary Ukraine. The fellowship is open to recently awarded PhDs
(persons holding doctorates for no more than three years at the time of
application). The program is advertised internationally and does not have
any restrictions with respect to citizenship. The Fellowship runs for twelve
months.

The Petro Jacyk Post-Doctoral Fellowship has both research and teaching
components. The successful candidate will spend most of the Fellowship
period in residence at CERES and a period of time in Ukraine (normally 6-8
weeks) based at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. While at
CERES, the Fellow is expected to devote his/her time to preparation of
his/her dissertation for publication and/or to start a new research project.
The Fellow will work closely with an appointed research supervisor and
participate in activities of the Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of
Ukraine. This will include guest lectures, workshops, and conferences. In
addition to research, he/she is expected to teach a one semester course
(seminar or lecture) that deals with contemporary Ukraine.

We are grateful to the Petro Jacyk Education Foundation for its continuous
support of the study of contemporary Ukraine at the University of Toronto.
We believe that this new initiative will strengthen the field of Ukrainian
studies and enrich young scholars with research and teaching opportunity.
