Dear Max, 

thanks for this note. It is good to have different rankings and pluralism of assessment. However, the assessment that you mention above is a Russian-made table which places Moscow State University as the world's number 6 ahead of Harvard,  Cambridge, Stanford, Oxford, Princeton, Berkeley.... MGU is certainly one of the better universities in Eastern Europe, but I am not sure that it is ahead of almost the entire US Ivy League, Oxbridge, Zurich, Sorbonne, Berlin etc.

The other strange thing with this table is that none of the five Ukrainian universities included is located in Kyiv or Lviv. Two are from Kharkiv, two from Donetsk and one from Simferopol. Kharkiv and Donetsk - OK. But Simferopol? And where are the Shevchenko and Franko universities or the KPI, LP and Mohyla Academy?

The only two more or less serious rankings that I found and that mention Ukrainian scholarly instiutions is this ranking of think-tanks http://www.ony.unu.edu/events-forums/new/CA/2010/world-rankings-of-thinktanks.php which mentions ICPS and the Razumkov Center, and this Webometrics University ranking: http://www.webometrics.info/rank_by_country.asp?country=ua where the Shevchenko University has the best Ukrainian world rank of 1346 (sic!). This is not an adequate ranking either, but at least it mentions 52 Ukrainian universities. Most of the other rankings (US News and World Report, Times Higher Education, etc.) do not even mention a single Ukrainian university.
