Södertörns högskola (Södertörn University) in south Stockholm is a new, dynamic institute of higher education with a unique profile and high academic standard. A large proportion of the university staff holds doctorates and there is a strong link between undergraduate education and research. We are now inviting applications for:

4 postdoctoral positions
at the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES)

The Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) is an international and multidisciplinary research centre that develops and coordinates research focusing on the Baltic Sea Region and Eastern Europe, one of Södertörn University's most important research areas. At CBEES, there are three prioritised research themes:

    * Knowledge and Sustainability
    * Cultural Theory
    * Social Landscapes of the Political

We are now inviting applications for four postdoctoral positions within three research themes.

# One postdoctoral position: Knowledge and Sustainability, ref. no. 553/22/2009
The postdoctoral candidate will focus on the knowledge society's development and future, a research area that formulates the problem of knowledge production in the intersection between different social areas and knowledge forms and taking into account, for example, gender aspects.

# Two postdoctoral positions: Cultural Theory, ref. no. 554/22/2009
At least one of the postdoctoral candidates will specialise in kosmopolis, a research area that includes issues such as human rights, citizenship, exile and migration in a contemporary and historical perspective.

# One postdoctoral position: Social Landscapes of the Political, ref. no. 555/22/2009

Areas of responsibility
The successful candidates will be expected to conduct autonomous research as well as develop research within the framework of the specific research theme applied for, by organising conferences and seminars, and presenting their own research nationally and internationally.

The successful candidates will work in a research environment focusing on the Baltic Sea Region that includes professors, research leaders, staff involved in the research themes and doctoral students. The environment is multidisciplinary and multicultural.

The posts comprise 80% autonomous research and 20% administrative duties in connection with the specific research theme, as well as of a general nature.

Qualifications
To be qualified for the advertised posts, candidates will be expected to have taken a Swedish doctorate or an equivalent examination from another country, no more than three years prior to the closing application date for the postdoctoral positions. Candidates, who have taken their doctorate more than three years before the closing application date, may be considered if there are extenuating circumstances. Such circumstances may include time taken out for illness, military service, trade union assignments, assignments within student organisations, parental leave and suchlike.

Selection criteria
In the selection process, a candidate's research skills will be considered to be of particular merit.

In addition, the following criteria, in the following order, have been determined as particularly relevant for the advertised posts:

    * The quality of the research plan and its relevance to the research theme
    * Proven experience of research in a subject/field of relevance to CBEES
    * Proven experience of research into the Baltic Sea Region and Eastern Europe
    * Administrative skills and the ability to work in a team
    * Ability to participate in third stream activities.

Terms of employment
The appointment is fixed term and full-time for a period of two years. The appointment is expected to commence in the autumn of 2009. The place of work is the university's site in Flemingsberg.

Application procedure
The following appendices should be submitted with the application:

    * Research plan (5-8 pages)
    * CV/academic merits
    * Publications list
    * Doctoral thesis.

The applicant should not submit information that has not been requested, e.g. references.
The research plan must include details of:

    * Relevance to the specific research theme
    * Details of the research that is to be conducted during the period of employment
    * The theory, method and material relevant to the research theme
    * Prior research
    * Relevance to CBEES and the research field in general.

It should be recorded in the application if the intended research involves participation in, or links with, international research networks.

The application may be submitted in English or Swedish.

We require three copies of the application. Cited publications will be required to be submitted at a later stage. If you intend to complement your application at a later date, this must be stated in the application. If this arrives later than one week after the application deadline, your application will not be considered.

Please note that one copy of all documents will be kept by the university for a period of two years from the date a decision is made about the appointment, in accordance with a directive from the National Archives. This does not apply to appendices that have been printed or published in another way.

The relevant reference number must be written on all copies of the application and sent to: Registrator, Södertörns högskola, 141 89 Huddinge, Sweden or via e-mail to: registrator@sh.se. The closing date for applications is by 31 August 2009, at the latest.

Unsigned applications will be accepted but must be complemented no later than one week after the application deadline with three signed copies of the application, including appendices.
