The Ukrainian Museum will kick off a new film series on January 16 with
the screening of the Hollywood-produced pro-Soviet propaganda film The
North Star (1943, b/w, 108 minutes). The film, about a Ukrainian village
that defends itself against the Nazis in 1941, is based on a script
originally written by Lillian Hellman. Produced by Samuel Goldwyn and
directed by Lewis Milestone, with music by Aaron Copland, The North Star
features an all-star cast of such Hollywood greats as Anne Baxter, Dana
Andrews, Jan Withers, Farley Granger (making his big-screen debut), Walter
Brennan, Walter Houston, Erich von Stroheim, and Dean Jagger.

The North Star received five Oscar nominations and was re-released in 1957
as Armored Attack.

Professor Alexander Motyl of Rutgers University will introduce and discuss
The North Star's entertaining but inaccurate portrayal of Ukrainians in
World War II. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer
session and a reception. Please contact the Museum at 212.228.0110 or
info@ukrainianmuseum.org to reserve your tickets ($15 adults, $10 Members
and seniors, $5 students, including reception).

The Ukrainian Museumís film series is funded in part by the New York City
Department of Cultural Affairs.
