ABOUT THE PRESENTER 
 
Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern (Ph.D., Modern Jewish History, Brandeis, 2001; Ph.D., Comparative Literature, Moscow State University, 1988) is Assistant Professor in Modern Jewish History at Northwestern University.  He was a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Hebrew University in Jerusalem in Fall 2007, and has held affiliations at Tufts University, Hebrew College in Boston, Spertus College in Chicago, Kyiv Mohyla Academy, Kyiv State University, and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.    
 
Dr. Petrovsky-Shtern has two books currently under contract: The Anti-Imperial Choice: The Making and Unmaking of the Ukrainian Jew (New Haven: Yale University Press, forthcoming); and Jews in the Russian Army, 1827-1917: Drafted into Modernity (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, forthcoming).  The latter work was published in earlier form in Russian [Evrei v russkoi armii, 1827-1914] by Novoe Literaturnoe Obozrenie, as part of its Historica Rossica series in 2003.  
 
His latest research projects concentrate on the material culture of the East European shtetl from 1790 to 1830, and the practical uses of the Kabbalah in Eastern Europe from 1660 to 1750.  
 
Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern's over 70 articles, reviews, and translations have appeared in American Jewish Studies Review, Jewish History, Ab Imperio, Jewish Quarterly Review, Polin, Jewish Social Studies, East European Jewish Affairs, The Ukrainian Quarterly, Voprosy literatury, Yehupets, and Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History.
