Some years ago in Ukraine I was given a lecture on language development by a Ukrainian academic linguist (the implication was that we never heard about such things in diaspora). The sad thing is that great many linguists in Ukraine do not differentiate between language development and russsification, the latter being simply politically planned linguistic annihilation. And this, I think, is a valid topic for discussion: why do Ukrainian language scholars support russification?
