Dear Mark,
One way to compile a list of Holodomor survivors from the
Dnipropetrovsk area is to use recent publications of eyewitness
accounts. Maybe you have already seen: "Ukrains'kyi Holokost
1932-1933. Svidchennia tykh, khto vyzhyv" (Ukrainian Holocaust
1932-1933. Accounts of those, who survived). It's a two volume set
of eyewitness accounts compiled mostly in the 1990's by students
taking history courses at the State Univ. of Dnipropetrovsk. The
project originator was Prof. Jurij Mycyk (Yuri Mytsyk, Iurii Mytsyk,
Georges Mytsyk), a well known historian and priest in the Ukr.
Orthodox Church. He currently teaches in Kyiv. An e-mail contact I
had from several years ago to him was through Kostrova L
<lik@ukma.kiev.ua>. See also a write-up about him from 2001 at
http://www.cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=15819. I'm sure you
can find better and more current info on the web.
A review of the first volume appeared at
http://www.artukraine.com/famineart/mace20.htm
Maybe you can get the book through interlibrary loan. The ISBN
numbers are:
966-518-210-2 for vol. 1 (Kyiv, 2003, 295 pg).
966-518-302-8 for vol. 2 (Kyiv, 2004, 442 pg).
A good first step would be to consult with Professor Mycyk.
You can also look at earlier survivor account publications such as:
"33-i: Holod. Narodna knyha-memorial" (33-rd: Famine. National book-
memorial), Kyiv, 1991, eds. L. Kovalenko, V. Maniak, 583 pg. (ISBN
5-333-00875-2). This is a gem that appeared in the final days of the
Soviet Union.
More extensive bibliographies of publications from (or about)
Dnipropetrovsk obl., including survivor accounts, can be found in
places such as: "Holodomor v Ukraini 1932-1933 rr. Bibliohrafichnyi
pokazhchyk." (Holodomor in Ukraine 1932-1933. Bibliographic guide,
on title page "The Genocide by Famine in Ukraine 1932-1933. A
Bibliography.), Odesa, 2001, compiled by L. Burian and I. Rikun, 654
pg (ISBN 966-7891-03-8) or "Holodomory v Ukraini. Materaly do
bibliohrafii dokumental'nykh publikacii" (Holodomor and Famines in
Ukraine. Material for a bibliography of documentary publications),
Kyiv, 2005, compilers L. Odynoka et al., 55 pg (ISBN 966-625-026-8).
This publication and others are probably on the web at http://
www.archives.gov.ua/. Click on the lower left box labeled Holodomory
v Ukraini.
The Shevchenko Scientific Society in NYC has an on-line bibliography
as do other sites. See: http://www.shevchenko.org/famine/.
One more idea: you can go back to the Oral History Project of the
Commission on the Ukraine Famine that Congress set up in the 1980's
and see if any of the eyewitnesses in the US were from Dnipropetrovsk
and possibly are still alive. Maybe you can get some contacts to
people in Ukraine from them.
Wish you much success.
R. Procyk
