Ukraine: Resolution of Political Crisis

The U.S. welcomes the agreement reached over the weekend peacefully ending
Ukraine's political crisis through pre-term parliamentary elections on
September 30. We urge all parties to adhere to this agreement and we emphasize
the continued importance of negotiation, compromise and peaceful dispute
resolution. We look forward to fair, transparent, and democratic elections and
continued progress on Ukraine's ambitious agenda of political and economic
reform.

While the agreement demonstrates the resiliency of Ukrainian democracy, the
need remains to clearly define the roles of the executive, legislative, and
judicial branches. We urge Ukraine's leaders to take advantage of this
opportunity to strengthen democratic institutions to the lasting benefit of the
people of Ukraine and their goal of a more united, more prosperous nation.
