THIS WEEK:
The March 2007 program of the Ukrainian Film Club of Columbia University
will feature the film "Arsenal" (director Oleksander Dovzhenko, 1929).
WHEN: Thursday, March 22 at 7:30pm
WHERE: Room 503, Hamilton Hall, Columbia University, 1130 Amsterdam Ave.
This silent film, based on the events of the Bolshevik uprising in
January 1918 in the capital of Ukraine Kyiv against the Ukrainian
People’s Republic, was initially meant as apotheosis of the communist
cause. Contrary to its deceptively unwavering pro-Bolshevik orientation,
Dovzhenko’s picture outlines, in a subtly coded form, some of the
dilemmas and conflicts that would rip the Soviet empire apart sixty
years later.
The film (73 min.) will be shown, with English inter-titles. The program
will be introduced by Yuri Shevchuk, director of the Ukrainian Film
Club, and will be followed by a discussion.
**********
NEXT WEEK:
The Ukrainian Studies Program of Columbia University is proud to host a
talk with two award-winning journalists and foreign correspondents --
CHRYSTIA FREELAND, US Managing Editor of the Financial Times, and ANN
COOPER, Professor of Professional Practice and Coordinator of the
Broadcast Program at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism
-- who will discuss the status of media freedom in Ukraine and
neighboring countries.
WHEN: Thursday, March 29 at 7:30pm
WHERE: Room 1512, International Affairs Building, Columbia University,
420 W. 118th St.
Please see next Monday's weekly Ukrainian Studies Program update for
more information.
