Subject: Special Issue of SEEJ on Contemporary Ukrainian Literature and Cultural
Identity
The most recent issue of the Slavic and East European Journal (the 50th jubilee
issue, vol. 50, no.3, Fall 2006), contains a special Forum on Ukraine.
The Forum entitled "Mirrors, Windows and Maps: The Topology of National
Identity in Twentieth-Century Ukrainian Literature" was organized by Larissa
Onyshkevych, who served as guest editor of the issue. It comprises of the
following articles:
-- Introduction (by Maria Zubrytska, Lviv University),
--"Cultural Perception, Mirror Images, and Western Identification in New
Ukrainian Drama" (by Larissa Zaleska Onyshkevych, Shevchenko Scientific
Society, USA),
- "Nativists vs. Westernizers: Problems of Cultural Identity in Ukrainian
Litrature of the 1990s" (Ola Hnatiuk, Warsaw University),
- "Ukrainian Avant-Garde Poetry Today: Bu-Ba-Bu and Others" (Michael Naydan,
Penn State University),
- "Envisioning Europe: Ruslana's Rhetoric of Identity" (Monash University,
Australia).
The issue also contains an article by Valerii Polkovsky on Lexical Changes in
the Contemporary Ukrainian Language since Independence (1991-2005).
Articles for this Forum developed primarily from presentations at panels and
symposia sponsored by the Shevchenko Scientific Society (USA) at various
national and international conferences.
