Greetings Fellow Students and Professors!

I would like to introduce you to one of New York’s hidden treasures,
The Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America, Inc. (PIASA).
PIASA is an academic Polish-American non-profit organization
supported exclusively by the public, its members, and friends.

Established during World War II when Poland was under the Nazi
occupation and the Polish nation was subject to enslavement and
genocide, the Institute acted as a means of preserving Poland’s
millennial cultural heritage on free American soil. Over the years,
PIASA has become the leading center of learning and source of
information about Poland’s history and culture in the United
States. It is also a research center and a disseminator of
knowledge about the Polish-American ethnic group and its role in
America.

Among the various benefits that students may find of interest at
PIASA are that the Institute acts as a liaison between American and
Polish academic circles. PIASA has an impressive membership list
that has included, among others, Nobel laureates such as Czeslaw
Milosz of Literature, Ronald Hoffman of Chemistry, Frank Wilczek of
Physics, prominent astronomer Alexander Wolszczan, poet Jan Lechon,
writer Jozef Wittlin, political scientist and former Presidential
advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, and several of the most prominent
professors throughout the country.

PIASA acts as a great resource for students to research various
fields of interest and can act as a means of contact with experts.
The Alfred Jurzykowski Memorial Library and Archives, which are a
specialized reference library on Polish studies, host an
extraordinary collection of books and materials. PIASA also
cooperates with various universities in sponsoring conferences and
other special events aimed towards perpetuating Polish history and
culture on the American academic scene.

Students have the opportunity to become students members of PIASA
for the very low rate of $20, which includes a subscription to the
quarterly journal, The Polish Review, discounts on Institute
publications and invitations to all Institute events, such as
receptions, exhibits, lectures, author’s evenings, and annual
meetings.

The present headquarters of the Institute is a five-story brownstone
nestled in the Murray Hill section of Manhattan on 208 East 30th
Street. PIASA is serious about reaching out to Polish-American
students since it knows that its future depends on us. So, if you
or your Polish clubs would be interested in organizing events or
visiting the Institute, please feel free to visit our web-site at
www.piasa.org or contact Mrs. Janina Gromada Kedron at
piasany@verizon.net or myself at ac2162@columbia.edu.

Sincerely,

Anna Czaplinski-Mirek
Graduate Student at Columbia University School of International and
Public Affairs
