Title:
Personal observation: I would think twice about circulating anything from an organization that represents the last dictator in Europe (Lukashenka) and his authoritarian regime.  It seems to me that doing so only helps their PR efforts and undermines the Belarusian people's democratic aspirations.  On the good news front, I doubt many of you are rushing to join THE EURASIA CENTER AND FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY.

Dear AAUSers,

I am forwarding two messages from outside the list. One is from the Embassy of Belarus, regarding Chornobyl (minus the html graphics in the original). I do not know anything about the foundation for Chornobyl/Chernobyl that they are endorsing. The second is from a Ukrainian researcher who is looking for information on a conference that must have been mentioned earlier on the list. Please respond to them, not the list or me.

Regards,

Rob DeLossa

in cooperation with His Excellency Mikhail Khvostov,
Ambassador of Belarus
and Ms. Kathleen Ryan of the Chernobyl's Children's Project International
invites you and your colleagues to:

Chernobyl 20th Anniversary: Honor the Past, Build the Future
Wednesday, February 22, 2006
5:45 8:00 p.m.

At The Embassy of  Belarus

1619 New Hampshire Avenue, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20009

On Wednesday, February 22, 2006, 5:45 P.M. The Eurasia Center and its Friendship Society invite you to learn about the continued devastating affects caused by the explosion of the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor in 1986. 190 tons of toxic materials were expelled into the atmosphere as the nuclear plant burned for 10 days. This was 100 times more radiation than the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Almost 400,000 citizens were forced to leave their homes with over 2,000 towns and villages bulldozed to the ground. Twenty-two [22] per cent of the Belarus land mass was contaminated with 70 percent of the total fallout deposited there. Radiation spread over large parts of the Ukraine and Russia and into Scandinavia, Poland, Baltic states, Germany, Switzerland, France, and England.
At 5:45 P.M. there will be opportunities for informal One-to-One discussions with His Excellency Mikhail Khvostov, Ambassador of Belarus and Ms. Kathleen Ryan of the Chernobyl's Children's Project International. At 6:15 P.M The Ambassador will speak about the long-term ecological, societal, and political costs of the accident. Mr. Pavel Shidlovsky, Counselor, will review the economic devastation of the disaster, continuing recovery costs, and international Chernobyl cooperation.

Chernobyl Reactor, 1986
The Chernobyl disaster is considered to be the largest technological disaster in the history of mankind. The picture was taken shortly after the accident, before the shroud was built over the blast area.
