Join us for an exciting afternoon of Music at the Institute!
The Ukrainian Institute's "Music at the Institute" (MATI) series continues its 17th year as one of New York’s best celebrations of chamber music, and one of the best kept secrets of the city’s cultural scene. This Sunday, January 22, 2006 at 3:00 PM, uncover the secret by joining us at the Institute for an exciting presentation of MATI’s "Anthology of Ukrainian and American Chamber Music."
Entitled "Two Cities, One Spirit - Music of Kyiv and New York," the concert will be performed by the "Musiciens Sans Frontieres" ensemble under the direction of George Stelluto, one of the most promising young conductors of his generation.
The concert's deep and colorful program of four pieces promises to move music lovers of all kinds, and includes two special works celebrating their U.S. and world premieres. Symphony No. 3 (1978) by the recently deceased and renowned Ukrainian composer, Ivan Karabyts, will have its US debut. Written in a single movement for strings, Karabyts’ work echoes the various colors of the string orchestra with emphasis on deep expressivity and research of harmonic and voice intensity rather than virtuosity and brilliance.
Representing the music of New York will also be the world premiere (string version) of Huang Ruo's "Leaving Sao" (2006), which was written for the Ukrainian Institute of America and "Musiciens Sans Frontieres," and will be presented with the works of David Diamond's "Rounds" (1944) and William Schuman's Symphony No. 5 (1943).
