Job Opening: Deputy Director
ISAR: Resources for Environmental Activists is a nonprofit organization
that promotes citizen participation and the development of the
nongovernmental sector in the countries of the former Soviet Union
(FSU). ISAR's offices and partners in the United States and Eurasia
support citizen activists and grassroots nongovernmental organizations
in their efforts to create just and sustainable societies by building
advocacy skills, supporting community environmental problem-solving
initiatives, galvanizing international environmental campaigns and
increasing public participation in environmental decision-making. ISAR
provides training, technical and informational resources to
environmental professionals through our Environmental Advocacy Training
Program, Environmental Infrastructure Program, and Environmental Media
and Information Program. ISAR's programs focus on five issues: Nuclear
Industry, Natural Resources, Sustainable Energy, Environmental Health
and Sustainable Livelihoods.
ISAR is seeking a Deputy Director for our Washington, DC office. This
person would manage the program-specific development process including
fundraising planning, proposal writing, reporting, and maintaining donor
relations and would assist ISAR's Executive Director in the general
support development process. The Deputy Director will also be
responsible for some program management, including the oversight of
certain program staff, backstopping specific overseas offices and
leading some program activities. The ideal candidate will be a team
player in ISAR-DC's hands-on, cooperative working environment.
Responsibilities Include:
* Creative leadership in program brainstorming and program design;
* Long-range development planning;
* Project development and proposal writing;
* Project budgeting and financial oversight of DC-based projects;
* Oversight of certain program staff;
* Development and management of grants supporting overseas offices;
* Assistance with general support fundraising and office administration.

Qualifications:
* BA/BS in international studies, Eastern European studies,
environmental studies or other related subject area;
* Master's degree or equivalent experience (2-3) years in the field
of public administration and international development;
* 3-5 years of project management experience, including experience
managing staff;
* Demonstrated experience in fundraising and implementing private
foundation and US Government grants;
* Strong Russian and/or other regional language proficiency;
* Minimum one year living and working overseas;
* Strong oral and written communication skills;
* Proven ability to take initiative and be a leader;
* Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks;
* Proven interest in contributing to environmental problem-solving
in Eurasia.
Anticipated start date is June 6, 2005.
Salary in the high 30s, includes benefits package.
