Ukraina v issledovaniiakh rossiiskikh uchenykh : ukazatel literatury
1992-2001 gg. / Compiled by A. I. Sliva and edited by V. N. Babenko.
Moscow: Institut nauchnoi informatsii po obshchestvennym naukam
Rossiiskoi akademii nauk (INION RAN), 2002, 155 pages. (Printing of 300
copies) LCCN: 2004413440. ISBN: 5248001633

This paperback bibliography, in a blue and yellow cover, includes 1526
monographs, collections, and articles divided into a dozen categories
(general, history/archaeology/ethnology, culture, literature/folklore,
sciences, political science, law, religion, sociology, philosophy,
economics and linguistics).

This compilation seeks to represent as far as possible a decade of
Ukrainian studies in Russia. That's about 150 works published in the
Russian Federation per year. Fair enough--Russian Ukrainianists are busy
studying Ukraine.

But the title remains problematic because it implies that the authors
are all Russian (Rossiskikh uchenykh).

Many of us know how difficult it is to ascertain the ethnicity of
Russian-language authors based on surnames alone. This is especially
difficult to do with Ukrainian-sounding names. However, most of the
listings seem to fit the "all-Russian" (i.e., rossiiskie) definition.
Curiously, a closer examination reveals a few "rossiiskie uchenye" not
unfamiliar to the AAUS list: Natalia Iakovenko, Iurii Shapoval, Mykola
Kotliar, Viktor Pynzenyk and Sherman Garnett!

By what stretch of the imagination are these authors Russian? What did
the compilers have in mind using the qualifier "rossiiskie": authors of
Russian ethnicity, authors whose home or affiliation is the Russian
Federation? Or does it also include authors from all parts of the
former Soviet/Russian imperial space?
