23.08.02    Ukraine Celebrates Eleventh Independence Anniversary

Ukraine declared independence following attempted coup d\'etat in Moscow
1991: 90% vote for independence in nationwide referendum in December.
Currently Ukraine is the flew fledged Central European country with 50
million population. It celebrates its eleventh anniversary Saturday, 24
August.
Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, has extended her congratulations to
Ukrainians on the occasion of their Independence Day, wishing them peace and
prosperity.
She greeted the people of Ukraine with Independence Day and expressed her
most warmest greetings and best wishes for future peace and prosperity.
Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenka has congratulated the Ukrainian
people on its Independence Day , and has wished them peace and well-being..
Lukashenka expressed certainty that the good neighbor relations between
Belarus and Ukraine will develop in the future, to the benefit of both
nations.
United Nations General Secretary Kofi Annan has sent the Ukrainian people
his very best wishes on the occasion of Ukraine’s 11th Independence Day.
Annan stated that the UN is a universal instrument of human progress which
may assist in the resolution of many problems.
“With the UN’s help, all may work to strengthen the rule of law, prevent
human cruelty and greed, protect valuable natural resources and the equal
rights of men and women, and to alleviate the suffering of the poor and
unprotected,” the press service quotes Annan as saying.
He added that humankind has the scientific and technological potential to
reach these goals. “I have great hope for Ukraine’s contribution to this
important cause and in the spirit of partnership send you Kuchma and the
Ukrainian people my very best wishes for your important national holiday,”
Annan declared.
President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma issued number of decrees for rewarding
Ukrainian officials and Diaspora representative on the occasion of Ukrainian
Independence Day with Ukrainian state decorations.
Mykolay Pavlyuk, public and political figure of Ukrainian Diaspora,
expatriated ex-president of Ukrainian people\'s republic, obtained Prince
Yaroslav Mudry ) order as a mark of his prominent personal services for
Ukrainian independence formation.
President Kuchma conferred the title of the Hero of Ukraine along wit the
Derzhava order to three heads of Ukraine large enterprises: director general
of the state owned enterprise “ Industrial association South Makarov
machine-building plant” Yury Alekseev, director general of Kharkiv based
joint-stock company “Turboatom” Anatoly Bughaets, chief designer of the
state owned enterprise “Zaporizhya Ivchenko machine building design office
“Progress” Fedir Muravchenko.
The Hero of Ukraine title is the highest state reward. About 60 persons have
obtained the title since 1998. The National Science Academy president Borys
Paton was the first who became the Hero of Ukraine, Obozrevatel informs.
U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Carlos Pascual is admired how the Ukrainians show
the consciousness that Ukraine is their own country every year of its
independence. 
After a parade devoted to the 11th anniversary of Ukraine\'s in Kyiv
Saturday, the Ambassador told Interfax-Ukraine he was excited to see
Ukrainians have an opportunity to celebrate its freedom and independence.
According to him, every year Ukraine\'s citizens are getting more and more
conscious of the fact their country and their destiny depend on them. He
stressed it was thrilling to see how they create Ukraine\'s future and how
their freedom grows. Answering Interfax-Ukraine question what made the
greatest impression on him Pascual said briefly: \"The music!\"

\"We have to leave some traditions and apply a European character to
celebrations of the state\'s birthday,\" Deputy Head of the Presidential
Administration Valeriy Khoroshkovskyi said Friday, adding that modest funds
were spent on this year\'s festivities.
Following the Lviv air crash, President Leonid Kuchma banned demonstrative
flights of war planes at shows, and ordered a reduction in the scale of
celebrations of Independence Day and other holidays.
After the parade, Kuchma was scheduled to present awards to medical workers
for their efforts to save injured people immediately after the deadly air
show in Lviv. (Associated Press)
